Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's advisor on strategic communications. It's not an easy task for Mercedes Schlapp to serve as the adviser to strategic communications at the White House. Schlapp is, however, not lost sight of her mission. She collaborates closely with White House political affairs and the legislative team as well as policy shops and the overall communications department to ensure that the policies are implemented. In her current position she's focused on various topics, including safety at schools and the use of opioids. In her current position, Schlapp does not deal extensively with journalists. In March, she gained a sudden burst media attention when it was public that her name was going to be considered a possible candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as director of communications. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. Her job is made difficult due to the fact she has to work with the president who acts as his communications director. There are also numerous legal cases which can disrupt an administration's message strategy, as well as Cabinet secretaries who are embroiled with personal scandals. Schlapp has never strayed from her mission, and has worked closely with White House policy and political teams. To date, her focus has been on topics such as school safety, the opioid epidemic, trade, infrastructure along with other issues. Her interactions with journalists aren't at all in her current role. In March, she gained a sudden burst interest, after it was known that Schlapp would be an option to fill Hope Hicks's post as director of communications. The fight turned ugly. Friends of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, another candidate for the position started fighting in the media. After Schlapp was informed that the Washington Examiner published a negative article about Sayegh Schlapp stated that she called the candidate to be open heart.
